Students are responsible for any damages that occur to the boxes and jacks in their rooms. It is the student's
responsibility to notify the GatorNet office of any problems they are having with their cable-TV, phone and
network jacks. Students are not permitted to attempt to open the network boxes to fix the problem themselves.
The following policies are designed to maintain network integrity, protect the privacy of faculty, staff, and
students, and preserve access to networks and services outside Allegheny College. By using any of these
facilities, students acknowledge their awareness of relevant College policies and that they will be held
accountable through the Allegheny College Judicial System if they are found to have violated one or more of
these policies.
GatorNet
GatorNetwork is the Allegheny College residential computer network. To ensure equitable and fair use of these
network resources by all members of the community, compliance with policies regarding acceptable use of
GatorNetwork is expected of all students who utilize it. GatorNetwork users are responsible for their own
actions as well as the actions of those they let access GatorNetwork through their personal computer and/or
the data jack within their room.
Actions that might prove detrimental to the network may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Any action that impairs the functionality or compromises the integrity of the Allegheny College Campus
network or associated networks;
Providing access to any College resource to individuals without authorized College accounts for such
access;
Providing Internet access to anyone outside of the College community for any purpose;
Operating a service that redistributes a College resource to others in or outside the College community
for any fee or other consideration;
Performing any action that denies another user access to network and/or computing resources;
Alteration of any kind to assigned IP address or related settings;
Using an unauthorized IP address;
Sending e-mail under a fictitious or anonymous name;
Utilization of any domain name other than those authorized by Allegheny College;
Operation of servers or other services that place high demands upon College network resources; and
Attempts to circumvent system security, such as allowing another to use your account and/or guessing
another's password, or in anyway gain unauthorized access to local or network resources.
Student Virus Policy Do not purchase your own antivirus software if you will be living on campus and connecting to the Allegheny
student network! Students must have the Allegheny Trend Micro OfficeScan installed on their computer if they
want to connect their personal computers to the College network. This program is provided free of charge to students
connecting to the College network when they register their computer for network access and is available for download. If a student registers for
network access and does not install the Trend Micro OfficeScan provided free by Allegheny College they will
receive a one-week network suspension. Check the
Antivirus Policy for sanctions students will receive for violating the Student Virus Policy.
GatorTV
Every room in the residence halls is provided with a cable TV connection. However, students must provide their
own television set and co-axial TV patch cable. Students are responsible for the cable TV wall jacks in their
rooms and they will be charged for any damages that occur to those jacks. Appropriate action under the College
Judicial System may be taken against any students who unlawfully provide and/or receives access to any premium
service.
GatorPhone
Local telephone service is provided to each residence hall room. Students are encouraged to bring their own
touch-tone phone but if you don't have one, they may contact their RA to arrange to use a phone from Allegheny
(the phone must be returned at the end of the school year to avoid being charged).
All direct long distance calls are restricted except for toll-free telephone numbers. Long distance calls must
be billed to the student's personal PIN number (this will be mailed to you), a telephone calling card or any
credit card that is accepted for telephone billing such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, etc.
Under no circumstances shall a student tamper with the College telephone, wall jack, or associated wiring. Any
extra telephone equipment such as an answering machine or a student provided telephone must be connected to
the telephone line using the standard modular jack. Nothing is to be wired directly to the telephone jack or
surface wiring.
